The Hazard
CLASS 1 WARNING: INGESTION
Great Lakes Wholesale International is recalling certain Great Lakes Select battery packs. The packaging is not child-resistant. This violates federal safety rules. If a child swallows a battery, it can cause serious injuries or death.
None reported
Why This Happens: Technical Breakdown
The recalled battery packs do not have child-resistant packaging. This means a child could easily open the package and get to the batteries. Button cell and coin batteries are small and can be easily swallowed by young children. Once swallowed, these batteries can cause chemical burns and internal injuries. This can happen in as little as two hours. These injuries can be very serious and even fatal.
The government requires that button cell and coin battery packaging be child-resistant. This is to protect children from the dangers of swallowing these batteries. Because the packaging on these Great Lakes Select batteries does not meet this requirement, they are being recalled.
