The Hazard
CLASS 1 WARNING: FIRE AND BURN HAZARD
The power cord on these space heaters can overheat while plugged into the wall. This overheating can melt the cord and start a fire in your home, which could lead to severe burns or death. The risk is highest when the heater is left running on the “High” setting for extended periods, particularly overnight or when unattended.
The company has received 122 reports of the power cords overheating. In 15 of those cases, the cords caught fire, causing damage to floors, walls, and nearby furniture. There have been 4 reports of people suffering second-degree burns, and 2 reports of smoke inhalation requiring hospital visits.
Why This Happens: Technical Breakdown
The root cause of this recall is a manufacturing defect in the power cord’s internal wiring. During production between January 2023 and August 2024, the copper wiring inside the cord was not properly insulated at the junction point where the cord connects to the heater’s base. This thin insulation breaks down over time with regular use.
When you run the heater on its “High” setting for more than two hours continuously, the electrical current generates heat at this weak junction point. Because the insulation is too thin, that heat cannot dissipate properly. Instead, it builds up inside the cord until the plastic outer casing begins to soften, melt, and eventually ignite. This is why most of the reported fires started at the base of the heater where the cord enters the unit — not at the wall outlet.
This type of defect is particularly dangerous because there is often no visible warning before failure. The cord may look perfectly normal on the outside even as the internal insulation is degrading. Some consumers reported a faint burning smell minutes before the cord caught fire, but many had no warning at all.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I know if my Lasko heater is affected by this recall?
Flip your heater upside down and look for a silver label on the base. The model number is printed above the barcode. If it reads Model 5160, 5165, or 5800, your heater is part of this recall. You can also use our barcode scanner above to check instantly.
Do I need a receipt to get a free replacement?
No. Under CPSC Class 1 recall rules, Lasko is required to provide a free replacement regardless of whether you have a receipt. You only need the physical product with a legible model number. Contact Lasko directly at 1-800-233-0268 to arrange your replacement.
How do I safely dispose of the recalled heater?
Do NOT simply throw the heater in the trash — someone else could pull it out and use it. Instead, cut the power cord with scissors so the heater can never be plugged in again. Then you can place it in your regular trash or take it to your local electronics recycling center. Always cut the cord before disposal to prevent anyone from reusing this hazardous product.
