The Hazard

CLASS 1 WARNING: INGESTION

SumDirect LED mini lights are being recalled because they pose a serious ingestion hazard to children. The lights contain button cell batteries that are easily accessible. If swallowed, these batteries can cause severe internal injuries, chemical burns, and even death. Stop using these lights immediately and keep them away from children.

About 1,600 units are affected.

Why This Happens: Technical Breakdown

The SumDirect LED mini lights have a design flaw that allows children to easily access the button cell batteries inside. These small, shiny batteries can be tempting for young children to put in their mouths. Because the battery compartment isn’t secure, a child could quickly remove and swallow the batteries.

Once swallowed, button cell batteries can cause serious damage. The battery’s electrical current reacts with saliva, creating a chemical reaction that burns through tissue. This can lead to severe internal injuries, including damage to the esophagus and stomach. In some cases, these injuries can be fatal.
