The Hazard
CHOKING, CHEMICAL BURN
ABC Trading is recalling WSDZ Light-up Shot Glasses because the button cell batteries inside the glasses are easily accessible to children. If a child swallows a button battery, it can cause serious internal injuries, chemical burns, and even death. These glasses fail to meet the federal safety standards for products containing button batteries.
About 2,900 units are affected. No injuries have been reported to date.
Technical Breakdown
The light-up shot glasses have a compartment holding three button cell batteries. The battery compartment is not adequately secured, meaning a child could easily pry it open and access the batteries. Button batteries can cause significant harm if swallowed. The moisture in the esophagus and digestive track activates an electrical circuit that causes caustic burns to the tissue. Damage can occur in as little as two hours. If a child ingests a battery, seek emergency medical attention immediately. These glasses do not meet the federal safety standard for button battery security.
