URGENT RECALL: 1.2 Million Meridian Vehicles — Airbag Inflator Can Rupture and Send Metal Shrapnel

The Hazard

CLASS 1 WARNING: AIRBAG DEPLOYMENT FAILURE

The passenger-side airbag inflator contains a defective chemical propellant that degrades when exposed to high humidity over time. In a crash, the inflator may rupture and send sharp metal fragments into the cabin at high speed. This defect has killed 2 people and seriously injured 14 others nationwide.

2 deaths, 14 serious injuries, 267 complaints filed. Approximately 1.2 million vehicles affected.

Why This Happens: Technical Breakdown

The airbag inflator is a small metal canister behind your dashboard that contains a chemical charge. When the crash sensor triggers, this charge explodes to inflate the airbag in milliseconds. The problem is the chemical propellant — ammonium nitrate — absorbs moisture from the air over time.

As the chemical absorbs moisture, it becomes unstable. Instead of burning in a controlled way to inflate the bag, it can detonate too violently. The metal canister cannot withstand this pressure and shatters like a grenade, sending razor-sharp metal shards directly at the passenger.

Vehicles in hot, humid climates like Florida, Texas, and the Gulf Coast are at highest risk because the moisture exposure is greatest. However, ALL affected vehicles should be repaired regardless of location.
