URGENT RECALL: Atlas Sierra 1500/2500 Trucks — Sudden Steering Loss at Highway Speed

Official Source: View Official Recall Notice | Published: April 7, 2026

The Hazard

CLASS 1 WARNING: SUDDEN STEERING LOSS

The electric power steering module can fail without warning while driving, causing complete loss of steering assist. At highway speeds, this makes the vehicle extremely difficult to control. There have been 89 complaints and 12 crashes linked to this defect, including 5 injuries.

89 complaints, 12 crashes, 5 injuries. 185,000 trucks affected.

Why This Happens: Technical Breakdown

Modern trucks use an electric motor instead of a hydraulic pump to assist your steering. The motor is controlled by a small computer chip. In the affected trucks, a software bug causes the chip to occasionally freeze during certain temperature transitions — specifically when the truck goes from cold-soak (overnight parking in cold weather) to rapid acceleration.

When the chip freezes, the electric motor stops assisting. Your steering wheel suddenly becomes very heavy — like trying to turn a truck with no power steering at all. At highway speeds, you may not have enough physical strength to make a turn or correct a lane drift, especially in an emergency.
