The Hazard
POISONING
Several brands of iron supplements are being recalled because their packaging isn’t child-resistant. This means young children could easily open them and accidentally swallow too much iron, which can lead to serious illness or even death. Keep these supplements away from children at all times. If you have these products, check the details below to see if yours are included in the recall.
The CPSC mandated this recall due to the products not meeting federal safety standards for child-resistant packaging.
Technical Breakdown
The recalled iron supplements do not meet the child-resistant packaging requirements. Iron is safe for adults but can be very dangerous to children if they consume too much.
The lack of proper packaging creates a significant risk of accidental poisoning, especially in young children who might mistake the supplements for candy or vitamins. Ingesting a large dose of iron can cause severe symptoms, including vomiting, diarrhea, stomach pain, and in extreme cases, liver damage, coma, or death.
