The Hazard
INGESTION
Maitys is recalling their magnetic drinkware charms because they contain small, powerful magnets that can be dangerous if swallowed, especially by children. If swallowed, these magnets can stick together in the intestines or attract other metal objects. This can cause serious injuries, including holes, twists, or blockages in the intestines, which can lead to blood poisoning or even death. Immediately stop using these charms!
About 16,400 units are affected. No injuries have been reported so far.
Technical Breakdown
The magnetic charms are being recalled because they don’t meet the safety standards for magnets. The magnets are small and can easily detach from the charms. Children are especially at risk because they might swallow these magnets, mistaking them for candy or small toys.
When two or more high-powered magnets are swallowed, they can attract each other through the walls of the digestive system. This pressure can cause serious damage, including perforations (holes) in the intestines, twisting of the intestines, or blockages that prevent food from passing through. These conditions often require surgery to correct and can lead to severe complications, including blood poisoning and death if not treated promptly.
