URGENT RECALL: SCUBAPRO Monorail Weight Pockets for Scuba Diving

The Hazard

DROWNING

SCUBAPRO is recalling its Monorail Weight Pockets used in scuba diving. These weight pockets can accidentally open during a dive, causing the weights to fall out. This can make it hard for divers to control their buoyancy and could lead to serious injury or even drowning. Stop using these weight pockets immediately!

About 2,800 units were sold in the United States, and another 40 in Canada. No injuries have been reported so far.

Technical Breakdown

The problem is that the weight pockets may not stay securely closed during use. The latching mechanism can fail, allowing the weights to come loose. When a diver loses weight unexpectedly underwater, it drastically changes their buoyancy. Controlling buoyancy is crucial for safe diving, allowing divers to ascend and descend safely and maintain their position in the water. An uncontrolled ascent can lead to decompression sickness (the bends), while an inability to ascend can lead to drowning.
