The Hazard
CHOKING, CHEMICAL BURNS
Panasonic VL2020 lithium coin batteries are being recalled because they don’t have child-resistant packaging and lack proper warning labels. If a child swallows one of these batteries, it can cause serious injuries, internal chemical burns, and even death. It’s super important to keep these batteries away from kids!
About 8,000 units are affected. No injuries have been reported.
Technical Breakdown
These batteries are small, shiny, and can look like candy to young children. Because the packaging isn’t child-resistant, kids can easily get to them. Once swallowed, the battery’s electrical current reacts with body fluids, causing chemical burns in as little as two hours. These burns can lead to long-term damage to the esophagus, windpipe, or vocal cords. Sadly, ingestion can also be fatal.
The recall is happening because the batteries don’t follow Reese’s Law, which requires child-resistant packaging and warning labels on coin batteries to help prevent accidental ingestion. The lack of these safety measures makes it too easy for kids to access and swallow the batteries, putting them at serious risk. Proudly American Store is working to remove these dangerous batteries from homes and protect children.
