Petzl America is recalling Nomic and Ergonomic ice climbing axes because the shaft can break during use. This can cause a climber to fall, leading to serious injury or even death. It’s important to stop using these axes immediately if you own them and follow the steps to get a replacement or refund.
The firm has received 26 reports of the ice axe shafts breaking at the handle. No injuries have been reported.
Technical Breakdown
The recall affects specific models and serial numbers of Petzl Nomic and Ergonomic ice climbing axes. The problem is that the aluminum shaft of the axe can break at the handle while someone is climbing. This could happen if the axe is used in a way that puts too much stress on that part of the axe, or if there’s a weakness in the metal itself.
Think of it like bending a paperclip back and forth – eventually, it will snap. The same thing can happen with the axe shaft under the right conditions. When the axe breaks, the climber can lose their grip and fall. The serial number, used to identify affected products, is printed on a label on the upper portion of the shaft.
