The Hazard

CLASS 1 WARNING: FALL HAZARD

Petzl America has recalled Nomic and Ergonomic ice climbing axes. The axe shaft can break at the handle during use. This poses a fall hazard, which can result in serious injury or death. Stop using the axes immediately.

The firm has received 26 reports of the ice axe shafts breaking at the handle. No injuries have been reported.

Why This Happens: Technical Breakdown

The ice axes are failing because the shaft can break at the handle during use. This can happen when the axe is subjected to stress during climbing. The break can occur suddenly and without warning, potentially causing the climber to lose their grip and fall.

The axes are made with an aluminum shaft and a reinforced plastic grip. It is possible that there is a weakness in the aluminum or the connection between the aluminum and the plastic. This weakness could cause the shaft to break under the stress of climbing.
