The Hazard
FALL
Petzl America is recalling SIMBA and SWAN EASYFIT harnesses because they might not be strong enough to hold you safely. The rivets connecting the harness’s components could be installed incorrectly or damaged, which can cause the harness to fail during use. If the harness fails, you could fall and suffer serious injuries or even die.
About 1,270 harnesses in the US and 220 in Canada are affected. No injuries have been reported.
Technical Breakdown
The recall is due to a potential issue with the rivets used in the harness construction. Specifically, the rivets that connect the mobile leg loop buckles to the harness could be either improperly installed or damaged. This defect reduces the overall strength and integrity of the harness, making it unable to withstand the forces exerted during climbing or adventure park activities.
The issue was discovered during internal quality control checks by Petzl. The company found that some rivets were not correctly crimped or showed signs of damage, raising concerns about their ability to maintain a secure connection. Petzl initiated the recall as a preventative measure to ensure user safety and prevent potential accidents.
