The Hazard
CLASS 1 WARNING: CARBON MONOXIDE — PORTABLE GENERATOR
This portable generator lacks a working CO shutoff sensor. Generators produce lethal levels of carbon monoxide — a colorless, odorless gas. When used in or near enclosed spaces (garages, basements, near open windows), CO can accumulate and kill within minutes. There have been 7 deaths and 38 hospitalizations linked to this model.
7 deaths, 38 CO poisoning hospitalizations. 290,000 generators sold.
Why This Happens: Technical Breakdown
Since 2023, the CPSC requires all portable generators to have a built-in carbon monoxide sensor that automatically shuts off the engine when CO levels get dangerously high. The recalled generators were advertised as having this feature, but testing revealed the sensor was either non-functional or calibrated incorrectly — allowing CO to reach lethal levels before triggering.
During power outages, people often run generators in garages or covered patios, thinking the partially open door provides enough ventilation. It does not. A running generator can produce enough CO to kill someone in a closed garage within 5 minutes. The faulty sensor gives a false sense of safety because owners believe the auto-shutoff will protect them.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use it outside safely?
Only if placed at least 20 feet from any door, window, or vent, with the exhaust pointing away from the building. Never in a garage, even with the door open. But the CO sensor should still be repaired.
What are the symptoms of CO poisoning?
Headache, dizziness, nausea, confusion, weakness. In high concentrations: loss of consciousness and death within minutes. CO is colorless and odorless — you cannot detect it without a monitor.
I already have a CO detector at home — am I protected?
Home CO detectors help but may not alarm fast enough if the generator is in an attached garage. Get the sensor repaired and always run generators outdoors at a safe distance.
Can I get compensation?
If you or a family member was poisoned by CO from this generator, you may be entitled to significant compensation. Use our free Legal Rights Assessment above.
