URGENT RECALL: SplashKid Baby Pool Floats — 2 Child Drowning Deaths From Seat Detachment

Official Source: View Official Recall Notice | Published: April 7, 2026

The Hazard

CLASS 1 WARNING: DROWNING — INFLATABLE POOL FLOAT

The seat harness on this children’s inflatable pool float can detach without warning, dropping the child into the water face-down. The float then inverts on top of the child, trapping them underwater. There have been 2 child drowning deaths and 15 near-drowning incidents requiring CPR.

2 drowning deaths (ages 2 and 3), 15 near-drowning incidents. 450,000 floats sold.

Why This Happens: Technical Breakdown

The float has a fabric seat that is heat-welded to the inflatable ring at four attachment points. The heat-weld on two of the four points was done at too low a temperature, creating a bond that looks strong but fails under the weight and movement of a child.

When a child shifts their weight or splashes, the weak welds tear. The child drops through the seat into the water. The inflatable ring then flips upside-down due to the weight distribution change, landing on top of the child and pinning them face-down underwater. A child this age cannot push the float off or right themselves. Without immediate adult intervention, drowning occurs in under 2 minutes.

Frequently Asked Questions

My child is always supervised — is it still dangerous?

Yes. Even with supervision, the float can invert and trap a child in under 5 seconds. By the time you realize what happened and reach the child, critical seconds have passed. Do not use this float under any circumstances.

Can I reinforce the seat welds myself?

No. DIY repairs on inflatable water products are not reliable and create a false sense of security. Destroy the float and get a refund.

Should I use a different brand of baby float?

The CPSC recommends that children under 5 wear a properly fitted, Coast Guard-approved life jacket instead of relying on any inflatable toy in the water.
