The Hazard
TIP-OVER AND ENTRAPMENT
These dressers can tip over if they aren’t attached to the wall. This is super dangerous, especially for kids, because they could get trapped underneath and seriously hurt or even die. The dressers don’t meet the safety rules (STURDY Act) for furniture, making them a big safety risk.
About 600 units affected. No injuries have been reported, but the risk of serious injury or death is high.
Technical Breakdown
The Shintenchi 6-Drawer Dressers are being recalled because they don’t meet safety standards for stability. If the dresser isn’t properly anchored to the wall, it can easily tip over, especially if a child tries to climb on it or open multiple drawers at once. This poses a significant risk of entrapment, where a child could become trapped underneath the dresser, leading to serious injuries like fractures, head trauma, or even suffocation.
The recall was initiated because the dressers failed to meet the requirements of the STURDY Act, which mandates that clothing storage units must be stable enough to prevent tip-overs. Testing revealed that these dressers are unstable and present an unacceptable risk to consumers, particularly young children. The manufacturer is urging consumers to stop using the dressers immediately if they are not anchored to the wall and to dispose of them properly.
