The Hazard

CLASS 1 WARNING: FIRE AND BURN HAZARDS

Tesla is recalling Powerwall 2 AC battery systems. The battery can overheat, smoke, or catch fire. This poses a serious risk of injury, death, and property damage.

Tesla has received 22 reports of overheating. Six reports involved smoking, and five involved fire. There were reports of minor property damage. No injuries have been reported.

Why This Happens: Technical Breakdown

The Tesla Powerwall 2 uses lithium-ion batteries to store energy. In some units, these batteries can fail during normal use. This failure causes the battery to overheat. Overheating can lead to smoke and, in some cases, fire. This is a dangerous situation that can cause serious harm.

The problem seems to stem from a manufacturing defect within the battery cells themselves. This defect can cause internal shorts or other issues that lead to thermal runaway. Thermal runaway is when the battery gets hotter and hotter very quickly, eventually leading to fire or explosion. Tesla is working to identify and fix the root cause of this issue.
