The Hazard
CLASS 1 WARNING: FIRE — LAPTOP BATTERY OVERHEATING
The lithium-ion battery in these laptops can overheat and catch fire during normal use or while charging. The battery can swell, rupture, and produce flames reaching 1,100°F. There have been 52 fire reports, including 15 that caused significant property damage and 2 that resulted in burn injuries.
52 fires, 2 burn injuries, 15 property damage incidents. 430,000 laptops sold in the US.
Why This Happens: Technical Breakdown
The battery cells in these laptops were manufactured with a microscopic metal particle contamination inside the cell. During normal charge and discharge cycles, this particle can create an internal short circuit between the battery’s positive and negative layers.
When the internal short occurs, the cell rapidly overheats in what is called “thermal runaway.” The temperature inside the cell rises to over 1,000°F in seconds. The cell’s casing ruptures, releasing flammable electrolyte that ignites on contact with air. Because the laptop battery contains multiple cells, one cell’s fire can cascade to the others, creating a sustained fire that can last 10-20 minutes.
