URGENT RECALL: MagnaBuilder Magnetic Tiles — Child Death From Swallowed Magnets (6.4 Million Sets)

Official Source: View Official Recall Notice | Published: April 7, 2026

The Hazard

CLASS 1 WARNING: CHOKING — MAGNETIC BUILDING TILES

The magnets inside these popular children’s building tiles can break free when the tiles crack during normal play. These are high-powered rare-earth magnets small enough for a child to swallow. If a child swallows two or more, the magnets attract through intestinal walls, causing perforations, blockages, sepsis, and death. One child has died and 34 children required emergency surgery.

1 death, 34 emergency surgeries, 150+ ER visits. 6.4 million tile sets sold.

Why This Happens: Technical Breakdown

Each building tile contains 2-4 small neodymium magnets that are extremely powerful for their size. These magnets are supposed to be permanently sealed inside the plastic tile. But the weld seam where the two halves of each tile are joined is weaker than the rest of the plastic.

When children step on tiles, throw them, or bend them during normal play, the seam can crack. The magnet — smaller than a pea but incredibly strong — falls out. Young children put everything in their mouths. If a child swallows even one magnet and then swallows another later, the two magnets attract each other through the walls of the intestines. This pinches the intestinal tissue between them, cutting off blood flow and creating holes. Without emergency surgery within hours, this is fatal.

Sentinel Action Plan

  1. 🛑 STOP: Take the tiles away from children immediately. Check every tile for cracks — if ANY tile is cracked or has a loose magnet, remove the entire set. Store them out of reach.
  2. 📸 DOCUMENT: Photo the packaging, any cracked tiles, and any loose magnets. Count the tiles and note if any are missing (a missing tile may mean a child has a loose magnet).
  3. 📞 ACT: Call MagnaBuilder at 1-855-555-0167 for a full refund. If your child swallowed a magnet: GO TO THE ER IMMEDIATELY — this is a medical emergency. Tell doctors about the magnets.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if a tile is cracked?

Inspect each tile carefully. Run your finger along the edge seam. If you feel any gap, crack, or the tile flexes more than usual, remove it. Hold each tile near a metal object — if a magnet is missing, it won’t stick as strongly.

What if my child swallowed a magnet?

THIS IS A MEDICAL EMERGENCY. Go to the emergency room immediately. Do NOT wait for symptoms. Do NOT try to make the child vomit. Tell the ER doctors exactly what was swallowed. X-rays can show magnets in the digestive system.

Are other magnetic tile brands also affected?

This recall is specifically for MagnaBuilder brand. However, the CPSC has warned about all high-powered magnetic toys. Check the CPSC website for other recalled brands.
