The Hazard
CLASS 1 WARNING: SUFFOCATION — INCLINED INFANT SLEEPER
Infants can roll over in this inclined sleeper and become trapped face-down against the padded side. The incline angle prevents them from rolling back, and the soft padding can block their airway. Four infant deaths have been linked to this product. The CPSC urges immediate discontinuation of use.
4 infant deaths, 19 reports of infants found in dangerous positions. 780,000 sleepers sold.
Why This Happens: Technical Breakdown
This sleeper cradles the baby at a 30-degree incline, which was marketed as helping with reflux. The problem is that once a baby develops the ability to roll — which can happen as early as 3 months — the incline works against them. When they roll face-down, gravity holds them against the padded sidewall.
A baby’s neck muscles are not strong enough to lift their head off the soft padding to breathe. The padding molds around their face, creating a seal that blocks airflow. Within minutes, the baby can suffocate silently. Parents in the next room may not hear any distress because the baby cannot cry out.
