The Hazard
FALL
Ocun NA is recalling Condor HMS Triple Carabiners because the gate might not close on its own. This means the carabiner could open unexpectedly while you’re climbing or rappelling. If this happens, you could fall and get seriously hurt or even die. Stop using these carabiners right away!
About 295 units sold in the US and 9 in Canada. No injuries have been reported.
Technical Breakdown
The recalled carabiners have a triple-locking gate mechanism designed to prevent accidental opening. However, the gate on some of these carabiners can malfunction. Specifically, the gate may not automatically close and lock after being opened. This requires the user to manually close the gate, which can be easily overlooked, especially in stressful situations.
If the gate isn’t fully closed and locked, the carabiner’s strength is significantly reduced. This could lead to the carabiner failing under load during climbing or rappelling, causing a fall. The recall affects carabiners with specific batch numbers which can be found on the spine of the carabiner.
