The Hazard
FALL
Petzl America is recalling certain ASTRO BOD FAST, ASTRO SIT FAST, and CANYON GUIDE harnesses. The D-ring on these harnesses can open unexpectedly. This can cause the user to fall, which could lead to serious injury or even death. Stop using these harnesses immediately.
About 29,300 harnesses in the US and 4,900 in Canada are affected. No injuries have been reported.
Technical Breakdown
The problem lies with the D-ring on the harness, which is a critical connection point for ropes and other safety equipment. Under certain conditions, the D-ring can unexpectedly open. If this happens while someone is suspended or relying on the harness for support, they could fall.
Petzl has identified a manufacturing issue that affects a specific range of serial numbers. The company is urging users to check their harnesses to see if they are part of the recall. This recall affects harnesses used by professionals working at heights, like climbers, construction workers, and rescuers. The safety of these workers is at risk if they continue to use affected harnesses.
