CLASS 1 WARNING: ENTRAPMENT AND ASPHYXIATION
Vive Health is recalling certain adult portable bed rails. The bed rails can create a dangerous gap between the rail and the mattress. This gap can trap a person, leading to serious injury or death by asphyxiation. Two deaths have already been reported.
Vive Health has received two reports of entrapment deaths associated with one model of the recalled bed rails.
Why This Happens: Technical Breakdown
The recalled bed rails are designed to help people get in and out of bed. However, when attached to a bed, a dangerous gap can form between the bed rail and the mattress. This gap creates a space where a person can become trapped, especially if they have limited mobility or cognitive abilities.
Once trapped, a person may be unable to free themselves. This can lead to asphyxiation, where the person is unable to breathe. The risk is especially high for elderly individuals or those with medical conditions that make them more vulnerable.
