The Hazard
ELECTROCUTION
BAYOTAK USA is recalling its electric pressure washers because they don’t have a GFCI (ground-fault circuit interrupter). This means there’s a serious risk of electric shock or electrocution if something goes wrong while you’re using the pressure washer. This could lead to serious injury or even death.
360 units affected. No injuries have been reported.
Technical Breakdown
The pressure washers were manufactured without an integral ground-fault circuit-interrupter (GFCI). A GFCI is a safety device designed to quickly cut off power in the event of a ground fault, which can occur when electricity strays from its intended path and poses a risk of electric shock. Without this protection, users are exposed to a significant electrocution hazard, especially when using the pressure washer in wet environments where the risk of electrical conductivity is heightened.
The lack of a GFCI creates a dangerous scenario because water and electricity don’t mix. If there’s a fault in the pressure washer, electricity could travel through the water stream or the user, leading to a severe or fatal electric shock. The recall aims to remove these dangerous units from circulation and provide consumers with a safe alternative.
