The Hazard
CLASS 1 WARNING: FIRE AND BURN HAZARD
Belkin is recalling some of its power banks and charging stands. These products can overheat. Overheating poses a fire and burn risk to consumers. Stop using these products immediately.
Belkin has received one report of a fire in the U.S. and 15 reports internationally. There have been two minor burn injuries and property damage reported.
Why This Happens: Technical Breakdown
The recalled Belkin power banks and charging stands have a flaw. This flaw can cause the devices to overheat during use or while charging. When a device overheats, it can melt, smoke, or even catch fire. This poses a serious risk of burns to anyone nearby and can also cause damage to property.
The problem is likely due to a combination of factors. These factors include battery quality, circuit design, and the materials used in the product’s construction. When these factors are not properly controlled, it can lead to a thermal runaway. A thermal runaway is a chain reaction where heat builds up faster than it can be dissipated, leading to dangerous temperatures.
