The Hazard
CLASS 1 WARNING: FIRE HAZARD
CCCEI power strips are being recalled. They can cause a fire if too many things are plugged into them. This is because they don’t have a special safety feature to stop overloading. A fire could lead to serious injuries or even death.
Middle Way Electronics has received two reports of the power strips sparking and melting. No fires or injuries have been reported.
Why This Happens: Technical Breakdown
These power strips are missing a key safety feature called “supplementary overcurrent protection.” This feature is like a circuit breaker. It stops the flow of electricity if too much power is being used. Without it, the power strip can overheat if you plug in too many devices.
When a power strip overheats, it can cause the plastic and metal parts to melt. This can create sparks and flames. The fire can spread quickly to nearby objects, like curtains or furniture. This puts people at risk of burns, smoke inhalation, and even death.
