URGENT RECALL: FlameChef Gas Ranges — Carbon Monoxide Leak Risk When Burner Appears Off

Official Source: View Official Recall Notice | Published: April 7, 2026

The Hazard

CLASS 1 WARNING: CARBON MONOXIDE POISONING — GAS RANGE

A defective gas valve in these ranges can fail to fully close when the burner is turned off. This allows natural gas to leak continuously, creating both an explosion risk and a deadly carbon monoxide buildup hazard. Two families have been hospitalized for CO poisoning. One home explosion destroyed a residence.

2 CO poisoning hospitalizations, 1 home explosion, 78 gas leak reports. 245,000 ranges sold nationwide.

Why This Happens: Technical Breakdown

Each burner on your gas range has a small brass valve that opens when you turn the knob and closes when you turn it off. In the affected ranges, the valve stem has a manufacturing defect — a tiny burr on the metal surface that prevents the valve from seating completely closed.

Over time, as you turn the burner on and off, this burr wears a groove into the valve seat. Eventually, the valve cannot close all the way. Gas seeps through even when the knob is in the OFF position. The leak is too small to hear, but it can fill your kitchen with dangerous levels of natural gas and carbon monoxide over several hours — especially overnight with windows closed.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if my range is leaking gas?

You may not be able to tell by smell alone. Install a carbon monoxide detector in your kitchen immediately. If the detector alarms, evacuate and call 911.

Where is the gas shutoff valve?

Pull the range away from the wall. There is a valve on the gas line behind the range. Turn it perpendicular to the pipe to shut off gas flow.

Can I use the oven part only?

No. All gas functions share the same valve system. Do not use any part of the range until the repair is completed.

Can I get compensation?

If you were hospitalized for CO poisoning or suffered property damage from a gas leak, you may be entitled to significant compensation. Use our free Legal Rights Assessment above.
