The Hazard
CLASS 1 WARNING: EXPLOSION — PORTABLE PROPANE HEATER
The gas regulator valve on these portable heaters can crack in cold temperatures, allowing propane to leak and accumulate. When the heater is ignited, the leaked propane can cause a fireball or explosion. There have been 23 explosion reports, 9 burn injuries, and 1 death at a campsite.
23 explosions, 9 burn injuries, 1 death. 175,000 heaters sold at outdoor retailers.
Why This Happens: Technical Breakdown
The regulator valve is made from a type of plastic that becomes brittle below 20°F. Since these heaters are designed for outdoor and camping use in cold weather, the valve is frequently exposed to temperatures that cause it to crack. Even a hairline crack allows propane to leak slowly.
The leaked propane is heavier than air and pools at ground level — inside a tent, this creates an invisible cloud of explosive gas. When you turn the heater’s ignition switch, the spark ignites not just the burner but the entire cloud of leaked propane, causing a flash explosion.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use it in warm weather only?
No. Even heaters used in warm weather may have already developed cracks from previous cold exposure during shipping or storage. All units should be returned.
I used mine last weekend with no problems — is it safe?
No. The crack may be developing and not yet leaking enough to notice. The failure is unpredictable. Stop using it and return it for a refund.
What if I smell propane near my heater?
Leave the area immediately. Do not turn on lights, use phones, or create any spark. Call 911 from a safe distance. Propane pools at ground level and is highly explosive.
